Wisdom and Age Ain’t the Same Thing

Perhaps one of the reasons some Black women are leery of receiving advice from older women is because some of these Crones are out of order.

Age does not automatically bring wisdom, emotional maturity, accountability, or honesty. Some older women are still deeply invested in patriarchy, bitterness, competition, respectability politics, and suffering in silence. Some survived dysfunction so long that they started mistaking survival for virtue.

And younger women notice that.

They notice when advice sounds less like guidance and more like “I suffered, so you should too.” They notice when older women excuse bad behavior from men, minimize abuse, romanticize struggle, or expect women to shrink themselves for the comfort of everybody else.

A Crone is supposed to be a keeper of wisdom, not a gatekeeper of misery.
